From 1 January 2017

All existing dwellings, including dwellings being leased, re-leased or sold:

• -    Smoke alarms older than 10 years must be replaced with photoelectric smoke alarms which comply with Australian Standards (AS) 3786-2014.

•     Smoke alarms that fail to operate when tested must be replaced.

•     Hardwired 240-volt smoke alarms must be replaced with hardwired 240-volt smoke alarms, otherwise battery operated photoelectric smoke alarms are fine.
